BRAZIL -- A 29-year-old Brazil man is in custody in the fatal stabbing of another Clay County man early Thursday, authorities reported.

Officials have confirmed Cody Allen Wade was taken into custody and transported to the Clay County Justice Center in connection with the death of Carl Haviland, 53, Brazil, whose identity was released Thursday afternoon.

Wade is currently being held on preliminary charges with the case turned over to the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office, Brazil Police Chief Clint McQueen said.

A call to the Clay County 911 Dispatch Center shortly after midnight reported the incident. Officers from the BPD, Clay County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police responded.

Upon arrival at 236 E. National Ave., officers helped provide medical assistance along with members of the Brazil Fire Department until STAR Ambulance personnel were able to make transport to the hospital. The victim later died from the injuries.

There were several people at the scene providing information to the officers.

“Information was quickly available,” Chief McQueen said. “This allowed us to determine and locate a suspect within minutes of our arrival.”

Indiana State Police crime scene investigators are assisting in the investigation at the scene.
