Caring and Sharing activities for Harris Hall exhibits during fair

Thursday, June 18, 2020

During these unusual times, the Putnam County Harris Hall Committee has determined that for the 2020 Putnam County 4-H Fair it will be focusing on community caring and sharing.

The goal is to focus on sharing agriculture and horticulture knowledge and share the bountiful harvest and gardens with the community and those who could use some cheering up. Organizers recognize that this is a tough year and not what was anticipated, but it hoped that everyone considers participating in the community caring and sharing events and understands that this year the committee would like to see compassion instead of competition.

This year, there will be activities related to artistic arrangements, gardening, agriculture, cut herbs, potted herbs, container gardening, and gardening plots. There will be separate activity categories for adults and youth ages 4-17. For artistic arrangements, gardening, agriculture and cut herbs, we are asking individuals to donate items to healthcare facilities, food pantries, friends, family and others that might need cheering up. Before you donate though, it is asked that you take a photo of the item to share as your entry. For potted herbs, container gardening and gardening plots, it is asked that you take a photo of your entry and share it with us. All photo entries need to be entered online by July 15.

Once it has all the entries, the committee will be doing people’s choice voting via social media on artistic arrangements, potted herbs, container gardening and gardening plots. All the photos that are entered will be displayed on social media. A virtual awards ceremony for the people’s choice categories will occur on July 23.

More information can be found at https://tinyurl.com/HHBooklet2020 or by call Purdue Extension Putnam County at 653-8411. You can start participating in these activities right now. The committee wanted to allow everyone to start early because plants are maturing at various times and this will allow the utilization of plants currently blooming.

Meanwhile, the Harris Hall Committee has already started planning for 2021 and hopes to be back better than ever.
