Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated two recent property-damage crashes.

• At 4:03 a.m. Saturday, Robert I. Rodriguez Rivera, 34, Terre Haute, was northbound on U.S. 231 at the intersection with the Interstate 70 westbound ramp in a 2007 Toyota Camry. Daniel L. Abshear, 41, Batesville, was westbound off the I-70 ramp in a 2020 Freightliner 114SD tractor-trailer.

Abshear told Deputy Jeffery Freeman that as he approached the intersection, he observed the green light and a vehicle traveling northbound toward the intersection. As he entered the intersection, Abshear saw Rodriguez Rivera’s car approaching quickly, fearing he would not stop. Abshear said he accelerated quickly in an attempt to get out of the way, but the car hit the rear portion of his car hauler trailer.

Rodriguez Rivera said he was northbound and closed his eyes for a second, not realizing the traffic control light was red. He said he was very tired from lack of sleep. Freeman agreed that he appeared to be fatigued. Rodriguez said he did not see the red light or the tractor-trailer until the collision.

The car sustained heavy front-end damage, however Rodriguez-Rivera was not injured. The car was towed.

The semi trailer sustained only cosmetic damage.

Freeman estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 4:07 p.m. on Tuesday, 4:05 p.m. Cyrus K. Spencer, 26, Greencastle, was westbound on State Road 240 at the intersection of State Road 75 in a 2016 Nissan Rogue. Michael J. Mlagan, 48, Lebanon, was northbound on State Road 75 in a 2008 GMC Sierra.

After stopping Spencer proceeded westbound through the intersection when his vehicle was struck by Mlagan’s truck.

Mlagan told Deputy Kyle Lee he was unable to stop due to wet pavement. He was also pulling a large camper.

Both vehicles were towed. Lee estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

Lee was assisted at the scene by deputies Scott Ducker and Brian Helmer.
