Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated two recent property-damage crashes.

• At 9:55 a.m. on Tuesday, James Stewart, 20, Coatesville, was eastbound on U.S. 36 in a 2005 Ford Focus.

Stewart told Deputy Tanner Brown he was following a downhill turn in the roadway when the driver in front of him applied the brakes and the vehicle began sliding out of control. At this point, Stewart applied his own brakes and then lost control, beginning to spin clockwise.

The front end of the car then hit the guardrail face and continued to spin clockwise, with the rear then striking the guardrail as well.

The vehicle was able to be driven from the scene.

Brown estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 9:33 p.m. on Saturday, Jacob W. Capps, 28, Terre Haute, was attempting to pull onto the road from the driveway at 6551 U.S. 231 North in a 2010 Ford Focus. Kevin C. Richardson, 51, Rockville, was southbound on 231 in a 2006 Buick Ranier.

Capps told Deputy Anthony Brown he looked left and right before attempting to pull onto the road. As he pulled forward, attempting to turn left into the northbound lane, Capps saw Richardson’s vehicle.

Capps said he believed he came to a complete stop prior to impact. Brown said marks on the road indicated the partial head-on collision took place in the southbound lane.

Richardson said he was southbound when the other vehicle pulled in front of him and he could not avoid a collision.

The impact pushed Capps’ vehicle southbound, causing it to spin 360 degrees and collide with a mailbox.

Both drivers, as well as a small child in Capps’ vehicle, were transported from the scene for medical evaluations.

Both vehicles were towed. Brown estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.
