GHS Alumni Association becomes Dollars for Scholars affiliate

Monday, August 24, 2020

Greencastle Alumni Dollars for Scholars has announced that it has teamed up with Scholarship America -- the nation’s largest provider of private scholarships -- to become a Dollars for Scholars affiliate.

In the fall of 1994, Jinsie Bingham was asked by Greencastle Community Schools superintendent P. James Renz and high school principal Bob Harbison to organize a committee for the establishment of an alumni association and the procurement of donations for a scholarship fund for GHS graduates. The Greencastle Alumni Dollars for Scholars endowment was created in 1994.

For more than 60 years, Scholarship America has helped community groups and organizations across the nation establish and operate Dollars for Scholars scholarship programs. This network of locally based scholarship providers helps hometown students access and complete their college degrees, certifications or career preparation.

“Becoming a part of Dollars for Scholars will allow us to better serve Greencastle High School students and to ensure that more students can pursue their educational dreams,” the organization stated in a recent press release.

Through its affiliation with Scholarship America Dollars for Scholars, Greencastle Alumni Dollars for Scholars will be able to provide local students greater access to private scholarships.

These help students with financial need by filling in gaps in funding, reducing the level of debt and hours they need to work while attending school, give them more freedom to choose the school that fits them best and provide community encouragement as students strive to achieve their academic goals.

Through this association with Scholarship America Dollars for Scholars, students who receive GHS scholarships do not lose institutional aid and, in some cases, may receive a matching scholarship from the college or university.

Greencastle Alumni Dollars for Scholars will also receive an array of benefits through Scholarship America Dollars for Scholars. These include expert support, accessible training and resources, web-based program and scholarship management tools, a customizable website template and hosting, networking opportunities, funding opportunities and visibility and public awareness through a respected national brand identity.

Donations to the endowment will be protected and invested by the Putnam County Community Foundation.
