South Jackson closed for sewer project
The closing of South Jackson Street, south of Hanna Street in Greencastle, began Monday and will continue for approximately 6-8 weeks, weather permitting.
The construction work is part of a DePauw University project that will improve the city storm sewer infrastructure that runs through the campus. The infrastructure is part of that inherited by DePauw when the city closed a section of South College Avenue for the university.
The project closes South Jackson Street near the DePauw Physical Plant and Greencastle VFW Post for installation of a culvert beneath the street for the storm sewer system.
Truck traffic is supposed to stay on U.S. 231 and take Veterans Memorial Highway west if it needs to access Manhattan Road. That wasn’t always the case Monday, Mayor Bill Dory said.
Additional detour signs were being added, he said, hoping that truck traffic would pay better attention to the detour than it did on Monday.
Meanwhile, local traffic can use either Berry Street and up Locust Street from the south or go across Hanna Street to access Locust.
“Most people know how to get around and out of the neighborhood,” the mayor added.
Additionally, the city is still doing some work on South Indiana Street where sanitary sewer repairs have been under way.
However, a delay in receiving some materials needed for that project has caused it to linger past its project mid-August completion date.
