Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 8:23 p.m. Monday, Colton B. Couch, 17, Coatesville, was traveling westbound County Road 550 North, having just crossed into Putnam from Hendricks County in a 1995 Ford F-250.

Deputy Jeffery Freeman reported that Couch attempted to navigate a curve in the roadway but was traveling too fast for weather conditions. Tire marks indicated Couch began sliding sideways and then overcorrected, causing the truck to slide sideways off the road and into a tree.

The truck made impact with the bed on the passenger side, just behind the cab. Freeman indicated the windshield was starred on the passenger side and the glass was broken out on the passenger side and rear window.

Both Couch and his passenger were unrestrained and the airbags did not deploy.

Couch complained of head pain but, with guardian permission, he signed a statement of release.

However, his passenger, 15-year-old Chanelle Scott of Coatesville, complained of severe pain and was transported to Hendrick Regional Hospital. Freeman later contacted the girl’s guardian, who said she was being transferred to the Riley Trauma Center for Children due to the extent of her injuries, which included a broken clavicle, broken tibia, eight or nine broken ribs, a lung contusion/lesion and other unknown injuries.

The vehicle was towed from the scene. Freeman estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

Besides the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, other responders included the Floyd Township Fire Department, Putnam County EMS, Adams Towing and several Good Samaritans who stopped to help.

• A Sunday-night crash on Interstate 70 left a Spencer woman seriously injured and a Terre Haute man facing several charges ranging from an infraction to a felony.

At 10:17 p.m. Marcus R. Blanton, 25, Terre Haute, was westbound on I-70 in a 2011 Chevrolet Impala when he T-boned a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Sharon K. Francis, 65, Spencer.

Following impact, Blanton’s car ended up in the middle of the median, resting against the cable barrier. Francis’ car came to rest at the edge of the median, facing south-southeast.

Francis was unconscious on the arrival of Deputy Robert Soilleux and was extricated, then transported from the scene with unknown injuries.

When officers arrived, Blanton was lying down in the back seat of his car, complaining of serious body pain and had suffered a broken right ankle. He was also later transported from the scene.

Blanton told Soilleux that he had been westbound in the fast lane, estimating his speed at 72 mph. He said he T-boned Francis’ car because it had pulled out in front of him to make a U-turn.

However, two witnesses traveling a different vehicle told officers they had seen Blanton’s vehicle driving erratically prior to the crash, speeding up and slowing down and swerving within the fast lane before it swerved into the slow lane, where it T-boned the other car.

Soilleux, who was assisted in his investigation by Deputy Derek Line and Deputy Marshal Levi App of the Cloverdale Police Department, preliminarily charged Blanton with possession of marijuana, dealing in marijuana, driving without proof of financial responsibility and unsafe lane movement.

Both vehicles were towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.

• At 7:12 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, Donald J. Adams, 29, Reelsville, was eastbound on County road 675 South near County Road 625 West in a 2012 Ford Escape. Adams was following Jacob D. Cherry, 29, Greencastle, who was driving a 1993 Chevrolet pickup.

Deputy Freeman indicated that Cherry slowed to turn into a driveway and Adams rear-ended him.

Adams told Freeman Cherry drove past his residence and began revving the engine and shouting obscenities. He said he knew Cherry was intoxicated and he began following him to call in a possible intoxicated driver. He said Cherry stopped quickly to turn into a driveway and he was unable to avoid a collision.

Cherry said he drove past Adams’ residence, at which point the other man jumped into his vehicle and came “flying” up behind him. He said he tried to turn into the driveway to get out of the way but Adams was traveling too fast to slow down and hit him.

Freeman administered a standard field sobriety test and a portable breath test to Cherry, who provided a sample of .112 alcohol equivalent concentration. He was then transported for a certified test, at which he registered a .104 ACE.

Cherry was booked into jail on preliminary charges of driving while intoxicated with a prior conviction.

Adams’ vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage and was towed from the scene. Cherry’s sustained only minor passenger-side rear damage and was driven from the scene by a sober, valid driver.

Freeman estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
