Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated one recent property-damage crash.

• At 6:17 p.m. on Thursday, Carlos S. Rivera, 46, Greenwood, was eastbound on County Road 700 South in a 2018 Kenworth conventional truck registered to Brown’s LLC. James A. Means, 35, Greencastle, was westbound in a 2001 Jeep Wrangler.

Rivera told Deputy Robert Soilleux he was on his own side of the road when he observed Means’ vehicle coming at him at a high rate of speed in the center of the roadway. Rivera said the other vehicle then started to lose control and fishtail, crashing into the front driver’s side of his vehicle.

Means told Soilleux he was only traveling 40 mph and claimed the truck was in the middle of the road and he tried to avoid it but crashed.

Soilleux noted that the road has no painted center line and is about 17 feet wide.

However, tire tracks in the road showed that Means’ Jeep swerved from the center of the road back into the westbound lane, then appeared to go about a tire’s width off the north side of the road just prior to the point of impact.

A witness said he was mowing his yard, facing east, when he saw Means approaching. He saw Means’ eyes go wide before he swerved to the north side of the road but he did not see the impact.

Additionally, various pieces of debris were located in the witness’s yard, some as far as 70 feet from the point of impact.

Both drivers said they did not need medical attention. Means’ wife arrived on the scene and said she would be taking her husband to the hospital.

Means was cited for driving with expired plates and driving without proof of financial responsibility.

Both vehicles were towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $50,000-$100,000.
