RUSSELLVILLE -- A major step in Russellville’s new water tower project -- that of having the land for it -- could be taken care of soon.

Council President Cary McGaughey announced during the Russellville Town Council’s regular meeting Wednesday evening that this land might be donated by Hanson’s Aggregates.

As of the meeting McGaughey said the transfer had yet to be approved by company’s president. However, the deal could be finalized by the end of this month.

He added that Amy Miller, the town’s grant administrator, was aware of the offer.

Clerk-Treasurer Martha Mandleco reiterated the importance of residents submitting letters of support for the project. She said they were needed by Oct. 30 at the latest.

Last June, the council was presented a summary of different options for the project. One of them was to build the new water tower near the town’s existing water treatment plant. At the time, it was stated that the town would have to purchase additional land.

Compared to two other options, this one was presented as the least costly at $1.24 million.

In other business:

• The council approved to become a member of Indiana 811.

• A resolution was passed establishing trick-or-treating hours on Halloween from 6-8 p.m. It was stipulated that those inviting visitors should leave a porch light on.

• The date for the council’s December meeting was changed to Tuesday, Dec. 29. The meeting will still take place at 7 p.m.

Council member Cathy Jones and Town Attorney Stu Weliever were not present.

The next regular meeting of the Russellville Town Council and Water Board is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Russellville Community Center.
