Betty R. Stewart, 92, formerly of Greencastle, passed away Thursday, Nov. 20, 2020 at her home in South Carolina following a brief illness.

A private service for family has been scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4 at Fillmore Christian Church with a public graveside service following at 11 a.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

Born Oct. 21, 1928 in Greencastle to Frank and Margaret Saathoff, Betty was the oldest of five children.

Her sisters Ruth “Ruby” Black of Greencastle and Amy Insley of Rockville as well as her brother Russell Saathoff of Greencastle preceded her in death.

Her brother, Chuck Saathoff, formerly of Greencastle, and now of Fort Myers, Fla., survives.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Norman W. Stewart, an IBM retiree. For many years, the couple resided at 733 E. Seminary St.

A 1946 graduate of Greencastle High School, Betty retired in 1999 with 25 years of service as a secretary for Head Start/CARS Children’s Division. Earlier, she had worked at home as a seamstress and as a telephone operator for GTE.

The couple were longtime members of Fillmore Christian Church, but years ago had helped form Sherwood Christian, where Betty served as secretary. In 2018, Betty came to live with family in Columbia, S.C., where she enjoyed the mild winters and lots of blooming flowers. There, she attended Midlands Christian Church, Lexington, S.C., until the pandemic.

She loved reading, knitting and visiting with friends, some of whom she had known since high school. Above all, Betty cherished her Christian faith and her family.

She had five children, Linda Mallory of Brownsburg, who passed away in 2018, and her surviving husband, Michael; Craig Stewart and wife Gayle of Coatesville; Kent Stewart and wife Sharon of Phoenix, Ariz.; Lisa Stewart Grimes and husband Jerry of Columbia, S.C., and Margaret Stewart Ferguson and husband Mike of Collierville, Tenn..

She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well as 53 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
