Local spike in COVID positives continues

Tuesday, November 24, 2020

Putnam County saw its recent increase in COVID cases continue on Monday, with 48 new positives.

That marked the biggest single-day increase during the coronavirus pandemic.

There was also an additional death reported on Tuesday, bringing the total to 27 since the pandemic began. However, 19 of these has been since Sept. 15.

The county’s positivity rate remained much lower than most of the state on Tuesday, at 6.9 percent.

  • Where are these numbers posted? I noticed via the Indiana COVID-19 Data Report that it shows a zero positive rate in the past 7 days for Putnam County. Is our Health Dept. reporting these cases to the State in a accurate manner? Seems odd that according to the state map at 11:24 am on 11/25/2020 we are still yellow with the amount of positive cases reported in this article.

Response by Jared Jernagan, Editor, Greencastle Banner-Graphic:
These numbers also came from the state site, though I'm not sure where the zero positivity rate was on there. However, the color ratings are only updated once a week, on Wednesday at noon, and the numbers those ratings reflect is from data gathered up through the previous Sunday. So when you get right to the end of that period (like at 11:24 a.m. on a Wednesday), you're looking at data that was accurate for the period from 1.5 to 2.5 weeks earlier. Seems like there could and should be a better system. We are now an orange, as of noon.
  • So I found on this site the actual data, that is updated every day. This has matched what our state records show on the in.gov site. The data you download will be for every single county in the US. It's very clear from graphing the data that approx. 1 month or so ago the virus finally really hit putnam county, and it's right now still rising. The nice thing about this data is that you can sum up the last 10-14 days (whatever you want) to get a feel for the number of positive cases currently in the county - as opposed to the overall total which is a very worthless number. There is also a death total file (separate).
