County Jail

Nine people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Monday

• At 1:56 a.m. Joshua D. Smith, 34, Coatesville, was lodged at the jail for criminal mischief.

• At 1:12 a.m. Jeffery J. Burkhead, 31, Greenwood, was taken into custody for battery resulting in serious bodily injury.

Sunday

• At 12:53 p.m. Scott D. Love, 49, Bonnieville, Ky., was housed at the jail for invasion of privacy.

Friday

• At 3:05 a.m. Russell A. Roberts, 44, Greenwood, was booked in on a pair of local warrants.

• At 2:37 a.m. Jacob G. Wood, 25, Indianapolis, was lodged at the jail for unlawful possession of a syringe.

Thursday

• At 11:43 p.m. Dalton S. Bell, 27, Bainbridge, was taken into custody for driving while intoxicated.

• At 12:27 a.m. Derrick M. Griffith, 36, North Salem, was housed at the jail for driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

• At 11:48 a.m. Arthur E. Kenworthy, 46, Plainfield, was booked in for possession of methamphetamine and trespassing.

• At 10:40 a.m. Candace M. Godsey, 27, Terre Haute, was lodged at the jail on a local warrant.

City Police

Two people have been arrested in connection with the reported theft of a pickup truck recently at the Marathon station on North Jackson Street.

Daniel Smyser, 38, Greencastle, and Samantha Hunter, 31, Greencastle, were arrested on charges of vehicle theft and theft for the Dec. 10 theft of a 2004 Dodge truck owned by Anthony Person, Greencastle.

Police said Person had left the vehicle running while he went inside the Marathon station at 6 a.m. on Dec. 10.

Less than 12 hours later, the victim spotted his truck sitting on blocks near Northview Apartments. The wheels and tires had already been removed from the truck, police noted.

In addition to the truck, the victim’s cellphone, tool box and a number of tools in the bed of the truck were also taken.

Smyser and Hunter were arrested by Sgt. Ed Wilson on North Arlington Street near Hillcrest Drive. They were lodged in the Putnam County Jail.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated six recent property-damage crashes.

• At 6:42 p.m. on Saturday, Jaylyn A. Duff, 20, Greencastle, was westbound on County Road 200 North approaching a 90-degree turn in a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt.

Duff told Deputy Josh Deal she attempted to turn but the vehicle kept going straight, leaving the road and hitting a tree.

Duff complained of no injuries and decline medical treatment.

The vehicle was heavily damaged and towed. Deal estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, David A. White, 32, Evansville, was southbound on Heritage Drive in the Gettysburg subdivision in a 2008 Dodge Challenger.

White approached a downhill curve on the snow-covered road and failed to negotiate the curve in the slick conditions, leaving the road and hitting several small trees in the ditch.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Reserved Deputy Ken Rozelle estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 3:24 a.m. on Wednesday, Robert J. Denny, 42, Spencer, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Denny told Deputy Deal he lost control of his car, which left the snow-covered roadway and ended up in the ditch.

The car was towed. Deal estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15, Alexis Miguel K. Valdes, 20, Roachdale, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2018 Kia Niro when he hit a deer.

Deputy Deal estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15, Jacqulin K. Paul, 70, Greencastle, was westbound on County Road 350 North in a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox.

Paul told Sgt. Anthony Brown her tire started to wobble, causing her to lose control. The vehicle skidded sideways before coming to rest in the ditch on the south side of the road.

Paul was transported from the scene for a complaint of pain.

The vehicle was towed. Brown estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 7:47 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 14, Brian J. Kamplain, 38, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 near County Road 700 South when a deer ran into the driver’s side door of his 2011 Chevrolet Traverse.

Sgt. Brown estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000. The vehicle was towed.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to three recent dispatches:

• At 8:58 a.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to 8 Beveridge St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 9:02 a.m. and were advised by the homeowner that bug bombs had set off the alarm. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 9:08 a.m.

• At 9:51 a.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to Opportunity Housing for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 9:56 and determined the alarm was due to construction dust. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 10:06 a.m.

• At 8 p.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched to 508 Maple Ave. for a odor investigation. Firefighters arrived at 8:06 and were advised of an ammonia odor coming from the stairs. The smell was determined to be rubbing alcohol. The home was ventilated, and GFD went back into service at 8:16 p.m.

Additionally, GFD recently performed six medical assists and had three disregards. There were also two runs where no incident was found.
