Drug charges follow latest Manhattan Road crash

Monday, December 28, 2020

A driver fled the scene after colliding with a utility pole on Manhattan Road early Monday morning.

The man was later identified and will be charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident as well as drug charges.

This was only the most recent of several incidents of vehicles colliding with poles along the major county thoroughfare this year.

Deputy Derek Line responded to a report of a utility pole and severed power lines down across Manhattan Road near the intersection with County Road 300 West.

Line found the Dodge passenger car abandoned and the pole completely severed. The driver had apparently lost control when he left the road and hit the pole.

The deputy discovered a small amount of heroin in the vehicle.

Through his investigation, Line identified the driver as 36-year-old Donald Cheney of Greencastle.

Line will be filing charges for leaving the scene of an accident and felony possession of narcotics.

  • The striping on Manhattan Road is long overdue to be repainted. This may or may not have been a factor in this crash, but the striping is so faded it is almost nonexistent.

  • He made a big mistake. Stripes or no stripes doesn't everyone know to drive on the right-side of a road?? Maybe put their cell phone down and pay attention??

  • Exactly, Don. Line or no lines, if you have a drivers license then you should know which side of the road to drive on and how to drive with caution, and I don't know keep your eyes on the road and watch your speed. How do you think people who live on county roads manage not to wreck every time they leave their house?

  • Those are all good points, but don't dismiss the lack of road maintenance on what is one of the busiest county roads in Putnam County. There are numerous no passing zones that drivers routinely pass in because the double yellow lines are faded away and there aren't any No Passing signs in most of them. There is also no shoulder so keeping the edge lines painted would help in bad weather.

There is no single cause for all these accidents this year, so all these factors need to be addressed.

  • Best striping job is on West Walnut Road because the County didn't do that one, it was a contractor. Manhattan Road striping is all but invisible in places.

  • Manhattan road was just redone. It f the stripes are gone it’s because people are driving on them.

  • Manhattan Road was overlaid several years ago. Striping only lasts 2 or 3 years before it needs to be repainted.
