The Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department has announced several programs coming up in the next few months.

Through the months of January, February and March the Park Department staff is trying its best to help families with cabin fever.

The park is hosting its annual snow sculpture contest again this winter. Although it has only snowed one time so far this season, the contest is open through March 1.

Residents are invited to send in their best pictures of their top snow creations in three different categories: Best Snowman, Best Snow Creature and Best Snow Sculpture (anything besides the first two). There will be a family division, youth division, adult division and group division. Send snow sculpture entries to Chrysta Snellenberger at csnellenberger@cityofgreencastle.com.

Meanwhile, on Jan. 19 the park will sponsor a Make Your Own Mr. Potato Head program at the Putnam County Museum from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Participants will get to use the department’s large collection of Mr. Potato Head parts to make a unique character and make up their own story about him or her with the opportunity to share your story toward the end of the program.

Also, on Friday, Feb. 12 the Park Department will celebrate Chinese New Year in another Brickmania opportunity staying within “social distancing” requirements, looking out for both patrons and staff members. The program will be offered at 50 percent capacity, so opening it to the first six Lego fans registered.

The group will be celebrating the Chinese New Year with a three-piece BrickHeads Lego kit. Know what animal is celebrated in 2021? Park staff urge you to bring your own rendition of 2021’s animal.

At this time, the department’s building block collection will stay in the closet. Individually sealed treats and drinks will be handed out. Pre-registration and parental supervision (one parent) is required. Again, seating for the event is very limited, so register early to avoid being left out.

To sign up for all park programs on the website, go to cityofgreencastle.com under the Park Department’s programs tab.
