Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage crashes.

• At 7:55 p.m. on Sunday, Christopher D. Hunter, 30, Coatesville, was eastbound on County Road 700 South in a 1998 Ford Ranger.

Hunter told Deputy Daniel Birt a deer came out of the dark and he swerved to the right, at which point the passenger side tire fell off the road.

Hunter then overcorrected back to the left, which caused the vehicle to change direction and head northeast. The truck then collided with a bush at 5635 E. CR 700 South. The bush broke off at the base and the truck slid across the driveway and rolled onto its top before coming to rest.

The driver was able to break a window to get out of the truck. He had minor cuts from crawling through broken glass but refused medical assistance.

The truck was towed. Birt estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 6:21 a.m. on Friday, Kali K. Strahl, 22, Martinsville, was southbound on County Road 775 East, approaching the 90-degree corner at County Road 250 North in a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze.

Deputy Brian Helmer noted that freezing rain in the area had the road covered in black ice.

Strahl slowed for the curve but slid straight into the ditch on the south side of the road.

The car was towed. Helmer estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• Around 10 p.m. on Thursday, Christian W. Caldwell, 19, Russellville, was eastbound on Railroad Street in Russellville, approaching the intersection of Spencer Avenue in a 2008 Ford Fusion.

Deputy Randy Patrick noted that Caldwell was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Caldwell left the road and lost control, hitting a Town of Russellville stop sign, a Duke Energy power pole and parked vehicle behind 213 S. Harrison St., the impact of which pushed the first parked vehicle into two others.

Caldwell’s vehicle was later located at its registered address, having fled from the scene. It had serious front-end damage and was towed from the scene for further investigation.

The three parked vehicles damaged were a 2012 Jeep Wrangler registered to Chelsey Martinez of Crawfordsville, a 2001 Honda Accord registered to Michael J. Boller of Roachdale and a 2015 Buick Encore registered to Brena K. Long of Ladoga.

The Jeep had to be towed.

Patrick estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.

• At 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Chloey E. Barnett, 19, Coatesville, was southbound on Heritage Drive in the Gettysburg Subdivision in a 2003 Ford Taurus.

Due to snow-covered slick conditions, she failed to negotiate a downhill curve and the car slid off the roadway into several trees.

The car was towed. Reserve Deputy Ken Rozelle estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500

• At 6:11 p.m. on Wednesday, Abigail M. Young, 18, Plainfield, was eastbound on County Road 100 South in a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox.

The road was slick due to the weather and Deputy Patrick reported Young was driving too fast for the conditions. The vehicle left the road on the north side and traveled down an embankment into a farm field, making contact with a power pole on the drive side front fender area.

The vehicle was towed. Patrick estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.
