County Jail

Nine people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Monday

• At 3:24 a.m. Charles Z. Atkinson, 37, Poland, was lodged at the jail for driving with a suspended license.

• At 2:52 a.m. Dustin A. Weddle, 37, Poland, taken into custody on a writ of body attachment.

• At 2:47 a.m. Terrel L. Terry, 26, Greencastle, was housed at the jail for refusal to identify self, false informing and public nudity.

• At 12:16 a.m. Keith L. Smith, 42, Indianapolis, was booked in for nonsupport of a dependent child.

Saturday

• At 11:13 p.m. Brandon W. Moore, 34, Monrovia, was lodged at the jail for counterfeiting, possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia.

• At 4:13 p.m. Juan D. Johnson, 42, Indianapolis, was taken into custody for driving with a suspended license and resisting law enforcement.

• At 2:21 a.m. Trevor L. Hewitt, 35, Roachdale, was housed at the jail for domestic battery

Friday

• At 9:41 p.m. Cory E. Smith, 35, Crawfordsville, was booked in for counterfeiting, forgery and identity deception.

• At 6:43 p.m. Bradley J. Martin, 39, Clay City, was lodged at the jail on a warrant.

City Police

Four arrests highlighted recent activity of Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 4:33 p.m. Saturday, Skyler Mann, 24, Hammond, was arrested by Officer Brad Hiatt near the corner of Highwood Avenue and North Arlington Street.

Apparently attempting to elude police, Mann pulled into a private driveway there, only to be arrested for auto theft, possession of paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license with prior offense.

Mann allegedly stole a 2006 Pontiac Torrent elsewhere in the county and was spotted northbound on U.S. 231 near Putnam County Hospital.

Moments later he was arrested and lodged in the Putnam County Jail.

• At 3:03 a.m. Sunday, Keith Tincher, 56, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Jared McDaniel at a Bloomington Street residence.

Lodged in the Putnam County Jail, Tincher was arrested on a Putnam County warrant with an original charge of failure to appear in court on a theft charge.

• At 2:15 p.m. Friday, Ronald Shillings, 43, Greencastle was arrested on North Jackson Street by Capt. Chris Jones.

Lodged in the Putnam County Jail, Shillings is facing charges of voyeurism and harassment via phone messaging.

• At 12:48 a.m. Friday, Cody Sims, 34, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Luke Brown.

Taken into custody at a Hillsdale Avenue address, Sims was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on charges of domestic battery in the presence of a juvenile and interfering with the reporting of a crime.

One recent accident was investigated by city officers.

• At 6:30 a.m. Thursday, a one-vehicle mishap was reported on Bloomington Street near Keightly Street.

Emilee Long, 43, Greencastle, told Officer Zach Rhine that a stray dog ran out in front of her 2007 Buick, causing her to swerve and run up on the curb in front of McClure’s.

The mishap rendered the vehicle inoperable but caused no damage to the McClure’s property. Damage was estimated at $1,000-$2,500.

One speeding citation was issued recently by city officers.

-- At 1:31 p.m. Thursday, Nathaniel Hackensmith, 24, Greencastle, was ticketed by Officer Nick Eastham for 60 mph in a 40-mph zone on State Road 240, east of Zinc Mill Road.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated two recent property-damage crashes.

• At 5:58 p.m. Sunday, Alisha A. Nichols, 32, Ellettsville, was northbound on County Road 550 West in a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban.

As she attempted to go down a hill, she lost control and was unable to slow down or steer because of slippery conditions.

The vehicle left the roadway in a left-hand curve and then traveled back across both lanes, colliding with a large tree. This resulted in heavy passenger side damage.

Nichols reported a migraine headache following the crash, and her husband took her to the emergency room.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000. The SUV was towed.

• At 5:09 p.m. Saturday, Deputy Soilleux was dispatched to a collision at Walker Apartments, 285 W. U.S. 40, Greencastle.

Katherine A. Gage of Paragould, Ark., had a surveillance video of a tan Pontiac Torrent backing into her 2004 Ford Expedition.

Gage and other witnesses were in the apartment at the time and heard the impact of the crash. They exited the apartment to talk to the driver, who drove off.

The car was last seen eastbound on U.S. 40 at a high rate of speed.

The crash resulted in damage to the right rear quarterpanel of Gage’s vehicle.

The Torrent should have damage to the rear passenger side quarterpanel.

The driver is described as a heavy-set white male with a reddish-colored beard and wearing a red baseball cap and a hooded sweatshirt or Carhart jacket.

Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to eight recent dispatches:

• At 4:15 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, GFD was dispatched to 1306 S. Bloomington St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 4:18 and determined the alarm was due to a leak in a sprinkler system. The alarm was not reset. GFD went back into service at 4:31 p.m.

• At 11:13 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, GFD responded to a structure fire at 2715 Fernwood Dr. Units arrived on the scene at 11:24 and assisted the Cloverdale Volunteer Fire Department with extinguishment. GFD went back into service at 12:22 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

• At 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19, GFD was dispatched to 82 Briarwood Ct. for a carbon monoxide alarm. Firefighters arrived at 8:06 and determined that a CO detector in the garage was set off due to exhaust from a vehicle. The alarm had stopped when GFD arrived. GFD went back into service at 8:26 a.m.

• At 9:26 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, GFD was dispatched to Opportunity Housing for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 9:29 and determined the alarm was due to someone lighting a candle with a paper towel. GFD went back into service at 9:36 p.m.

• At 1:28 p.m. on Thursday, GFD was dispatched to 1109 Indianapolis Rd. for a possible gas leak. Firefighters arrived at 1:32 and determined the smell was mistaken for sewer drain. GFD went back into service at 1:41 p.m.

• At 5:36 p.m. on Saturday, was dispatched to 1155 Avenue E for a smoke alarm. Firefighters arrived at 5:41 and determined that the smoke detectors were bad and needed replaced. GFD went back into service at 6:31 p.m.

• At 10:22 p.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched to the Peeler Art Center for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived soon after and determined that a steam generator had malfunctioned and was emitting into the main gallery area. The scene was turned over to maintenance, and GFD went back into service at 11:19 p.m.

• At 2:53 p.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to Mill Pond Health Campus for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 2:57 and found that there was a strong smell of popcorn in the facility. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 3:07 p.m.

Additionally, GFD recently performed 13 medical assists and had two disregards.
