Gonzalez murder trial rescheduled for May

The jury trial of a Terre Haute man accused of murdering a Greencastle woman is now set for May.

John Gonzalez, 29, is charged with muder and four other felonies relating to the Jan. 28, 2020 death of Lisa Attkisson at her home on the city’s South Side.

Between COVID-19 and other continuances, the trial has been delayed several times.

The latest order by Superior Court Judge Denny Bridges, granting the request of Gonzalez’s public defender Jim Hanner, sets jury selection to take place on Friday, May 21, with the trial commencing on Monday, May 24.

The recently-canceled date was for late March.

Attkisson’s body was discovered on the morning of Jan. 29, 2020, and Gonzalez was found five days later in western Illinois, near Attkisson’s stolen vehicle and in possession of several of her belongings.

Gonzalez’s other charges include Level 6 felony auto theft, Level 6 felony theft of a firearm, Level 4 felony unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon and Level 5 felony carrying a handgun without a license with a prior conviction.

He has a history of violent crimes dating back nearly a decade.
