COVID-19 vaccine eligibility continues to expand

Sen. Rodric Bray

Indiana has been hard at work getting the COVID-19 vaccine to Hoosiers using an age-based approach for eligibility. As of Monday, Feb. 1, Hoosiers ages 65 and older were able to sign up to receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Progressing in this way through age groups makes good sense – once Indiana has vaccinated Hoosiers age 60 and above, we will have vaccinated only a little more than 20 percent of our population, but we will have vaccinated those Hoosiers who have accounted for more than 64 percent of hospitalizations and 93 percent of the deaths due to COVID-19.

In addition, our first responders, frontline health care workers, long-term care facility workers and long-term care residents are also eligible to receive the vaccine.

I fully support the efforts being made statewide to allocate the vaccine, and I strongly encourage those who are eligible to schedule a time to be vaccinated by visiting ourshot.in.gov.

Alternatively, Hoosiers or their representative may call 2-1-1 to schedule their appointment. The Indiana 211 call center is available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, including weekends.

There are more than 200 vaccination clinics in Indiana, which can be found in all 92 counties throughout the state, including 10 clinics in and around Senate District 37.

The appointment for the second dose of the vaccine is made at the clinic once the first dose is administered. The vaccines are free for Indiana residents, however, individuals with health insurance are required to input their insurance information upon registration.

Further expansions of who is eligible to receive the vaccine will continue to depend on the supply of the COVID-19 vaccine that comes to Indiana.

For my part, I plan to get the vaccine when I become eligible, and I want to encourage all Hoosiers to do the same. So far, more than 600,000 first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, and more than 166,000 Hoosiers are fully vaccinated.

I’m also pleased to report that more than 5,200 Hoosiers in Senate District 37 are now fully vaccinated.

I am confident that the COVID-19 vaccine will help us return to normalcy and overcome the coronavirus pandemic. I urge all eligible Hoosiers to take advantage of this free, safe vaccine.
