Laddie Mayberry died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021 at EnMotion Rehab in Danville.

He was born March 22, 1925 to Arlo Raymond Mayberry and Hannah Elsie Burdette Mayberry in Coe, Pike County, Indiana.

The family moved to Plainville when Laddie was about six years old. He worked as a carpenter all of his life.

On September 11, 1982 he married Rev. Paula Gail Young and they had one daughter, Hannah Alison Mayberry.

Laddie graduated from Plainville High School in 1943 and entered the Army.

He was a World War II vet having served in the Army Air Corps in the China-Burma-India Theater as a flight engineer on cargo runs across the Himalayan hump to provide gasoline and other supplies to the troops.

In high school Laddie played basketball and later played in a semi-pro basketball league for a while. He loved gardening, traveling, sports and talking with people wherever he went. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal fan. He could always find someone with whom he had something in common. He also loved playing catch or basketball with his daughter.

Laddie was a member of the Plainville United Methodist Church. For several years he was a member of the Hump Pilots Association and the Elnora American Legion. He enjoyed all the congregations that he and Paula served and was always helpful in many ways at the churches and in caring for parsonages. A friend told Paula that he always wanted to follow her when moving because he knew the parsonage would be in good shape.

Laddie and Paula retired in 2014 and Laddie continued to work on carpentry projects and gardening throughout the summer of 2020. He was a truly good man and a person that many people called friend.

Laddie is survived by his wife, daughter, nieces, nephew, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Henry, James and Malcolm; and sisters Vivian, Frances, Alberta Fern and Sarah.

Friends may call at the Plainville United Methodist Church on Tuesday Feb. 23 from noon- 2 p.m. A brief service will follow at the church with burial in the Plainville Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 3:30 p.m. at the Lawrence United Methodist Church at 52nd and Shadeland Avenue in Indianapolis. Attendees at both services are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.
