COLLEGE REPORT: Oakland reaches Horizon League Semis; DePauw men, women win again

ROCHESTER, Mich. — The Oakland men's basketball team defeated the Youngstown State Penguins 87-83 in overtime at home to advance to the Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship semifinals in Indianapolis.

Jalen Moore and Daniel Oladapo each recorded double-doubles to lead OU in the tournament victory. Moore had 20 points and 11 assists, while Oladapo notched 17 points and 10 rebounds. Rashad Williams was dominant in the second half, as he totaled 19 of his team-high 22 points in the period. Micah Parrish scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting to round out Oakland scorers in double figures. Trey Townsend contributed on defense with nine rebounds and three steals. To add, the freshman drew six charges.

The OU defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday's game, forcing YSU (15-12, 10-12 HL) to a season-high 20 turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Parrish matched a career-high with four steals to lead the Golden Grizzlies in the category.

Oladapo pulled down six offensive rebounds to pace the Oakland offense, which grabbed 13 boards and turned them into 16 second-chance points.

After falling behind 8-7, Oakland went on a 6-0 run with 14:45 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Moore, to take a 13-8 lead. The Golden Grizzlies extended their advantage to eight points, 32-24, following a layup by Oladapo. The Penguins responded with a 9-2 run to even the score at 36-all with under a minute remaining in the period. OU collected a free throw right before halftime to enter the break with a 37-36 lead. Oakland outscored YSU 22-10 in the paint, while YSU hit seven 3-pointers to stay within distance.

Following intermission, Oakland widened its lead, expanding it to 62-51 with 9:35 to go in the contest. The Penguins fought back with an 11-0 run, resulting in a 62-62 score at the 5:36 mark in the half. YSU missed on a deep 3-point attempt in the final possession of the period with the score tied 73-73. The overtime marked the sixth of the season for the Golden Grizzlies.

In overtime, Youngstown State snagged a 78-76 advantage with 2:58 left in the first overtime before Oakland responded by going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Moore's layup, to seize an 84-78 lead with 50 seconds to go in the period. The Penguins narrowed the margin to three points, 86-83, with 13 seconds remaining, but the Golden Grizzlies held on for the 87-83 win.

The Golden Grizzlies (11-17, 11-10 HL) will face No. 4 seed Northern Kentucky in the Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship semifinals on Monday, March 8 at 9:30 p.m. ET. on ESPN2.

CRAWFORDSVILLE - DePauw shot 60 percent from the field for the game and 82.9 percent in the second half on the way to an 84-70 win at Wabash. The 12th-ranked Tigers moved to 11-1, while the Little Giants dropped to 5-5.

DePauw jumped out to as much as a 10-point lead in the first half at 26-16 on Grant Niego’s layup with 7:57 left. Wabash battled back with a 17-5 run to take its first lead of the contest at 33-31 before the teams went to the break tied, 35-35.

The Tigers opened the second half with a 9-0 run with six points from Nolan Ginther and a 3-pointer by Elijah Hales.

Wabash closed the gap back to 44-40 before DePauw stretched the lead to as many as 13 at 64-51. The Little Giants again chipped away at the deficit and trailed 73-68 after an Ahmoni Jones layup with 4:07 remaining.

DePauw, however, scored on four straight possessions capped by Ginther’s layup with 2:22 left which pushed the lead to 80-68 and sealed the victory. Nick Felke’s bucket with 1:05 left pushed his career total to 1,001 and made him the 28th player in program history to reach the milestone.

Ginther, who also recently reached the 1,000-point mark in a home game against Wittenberg, led the Tigers with 25, while Aaron Shank and Niego each added 13 and Josh Hall finished with 12.

Tyler Watson paced Wabash with 27 points followed by Kellen Schreiber with 21 and Jones with 10.

DePauw outrebounded the Little Giants, 29-25, as Hall and Shank each had five. Ginther finished with five assists and shared the team lead with Hall as each recorded two steals.

The two teams square off in a 3 p.m. game on Saturday.

Women's Basketball

• DePauw 74, Illinois College 35

Jacksonville, Ill. - Eighth-ranked DePauw knocked down 10 3-pointers and recorded 15 steals on the way to a 74-35 win at Illinois College. The Tigers moved to 8-1, while the Lady Blues dropped to 4-4.

Illinois College briefly held a 7-6 lead in the opening quarter before Mya Shannon hit a pair of 3-pointers and Campbell Montgomery a layup to put the Tigers ahead for good. DePauw hit 56 percent from the floor and nailed four treys in the second to expand the lead to 41-18 at the intermission. The hosts got no closer than 20 the rest of the way and the Tigers scored 14 straight in the fourth to take their largest lead of the game at 74-31.

Shannon led the Tigers with 14 points, while Imani Graham netted a career high with 11 points including three 3-pointers. Hayley Cange chipped in 10 points and shared the team rebounding lead with Campbell Montgomery as each had six. Maura Fitzgerald dished out a game-high five assists. Madison Schoenfeld led Illinois College with eight points and Lilly Pepper grabbed 10 rebounds.

DePauw shot 47.5 percent from the floor and hit 10 of 19 from 3-point range, while the Lady Blues connected on just 22.9 percent. DePauw committed just 14 turnovers to Illinois College’s 14 for a 29-8 edge in points off of turnovers. The hosts outrebounded DePauw, 42-38.
