GAC to sponsor ‘We ART Putnam County’ banner contest

The Greencastle Arts Council invites area young artists to help highlight the unique qualities of Putnam County through participation in its “We ART Putnam County” Banner Campaign.

For this contest, which runs through April 30, the GAC is seeking submissions of original art by local children to be professionally printed on a new set of light pole banners that will be displayed around the Putnam County Courthouse square. There is no cost to enter.

“The Greencastle Arts Council seeks to expand visibility of the arts in our community, and what better way to promote the local talent of our youth than on a unique banner, designed by them,” said GAC board member Rachel Curtis, who, with her husband Bill, and fellow committee member Lisa Cooper, are co-coordinating the activity.

“The project promotes the talents of local students by celebrating their creativeness, highlights the county’s unique assets and attractions, and promotes tourism within Putnam County,” Curtis added. “Every person who visits the county seat will have the opportunity to view the different designs made by the youth, encouraging visitors to explore the various communities in Putnam County.”

Any middle school-aged student residing in Putnam County is eligible to enter the banner contest, including home-schooled children. All submissions must be on 9 x12-inch paper and have a vertical, “portrait-style” orientation. Artwork should be of an original design and fill the entire page — top to bottom and side to side.

Entries can be any medium, however, simple designs that are bold with clearly defined lines will translate the most successfully to a banner.

To be eligible for consideration, completed entries are due by noon Friday, April 30, and can be turned in to the school art teacher or dropped off at the Putnam County Public Library. Entries should also be sure to include the artist’s name, the medium used and the parent’s contact information.

All artwork will be judged by a panel of professional artists, and the GAC will provide the graphic services needed to prepare the winning designs from each school district for printing. Original work will be returned to the artists; the banners will become property of the City of Greencastle.
