The Greencastle Virtual Music Festival celebrates the start of spring Wednesday this week with a 7:30 p.m. program featuring Molly and Brian Keith Wallen performing a variety of songs in their unique “foot-stomping hippie music” style.

Filmed in Greencastle’s Gobin Church, this week’s program is a co-presentation with the Sunny Side Concert Series, which is organized and hosted by Bobbie Lancaster for Mill Pond Health Campus and funded in part by a grant from the Putnam County Community Foundation.

The pre-recorded 45-minute program goes “live” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and can be heard and seen:

-- In a watch party with post-concert discussion hosted by Eric Edberg at http://watch.gvmf.live

The Wallens have brought their close-knit harmony vocals and storytelling to Australia, Europe and across the U.S. at events like the Telluride Blues Fest. Originally from Kentucky, Molly is a classically-trained vocalist and percussionist with experience in opera and bluegrass alike. Hoosier guitarist/vocalist Brian Keith Wallen won second place in the 2015 International Blues Challenge and was also named “Artist of the Year” by the Starr-Gennett Foundation.

Incorporating elements of bluegrass, blues and folk, their sound is best described as foot-stomping hippie music. Shared influences include John Prine, Nickel Creek, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires. From Facebook Live streams to outdoor venues all over the Midwest, Brian and Molly’s feel-good sound is the perfect pick-me-up during these challenging times.

Upcoming virtual events will include a wide variety of musical genres in keeping with the festival’s commitment to “experiencing community through shared arts experiences” and “friends making music for friends.” The Greencastle Virtual Music Festival programs are made possible by the Greencastle Summer Music Festival family of donors and the GSMF endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation, the Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the DePauw Performing Arts Series, the Inn at DePauw, the people of Gobin Church, and in partnership with the Sunny Side concert series.

Contributions, which provide income for musicians impacted by the pandemic shutdown of live performances, can be made at http://greencastlemusic.org/donate.
