DePauw closes football season with 41-7 win

Chase Andries rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another, while the defense held Greenville to just a second-quarter touchdown on the way to a 41-7 win on Nick Mourouzis Field at Blackstock Stadium Saturday. The Tigers finished the 2021 spring with a 2-0 record, while the Panthers fell to 0-1.

After punting on its opening series, DePauw scored on the next four to take a 28-7 halftime lead. That opening punt by Taylor Richardson was downed at the Greenville 1-yard line. Three plays later, Josh Pottebaum picked off Chase Butterfield’s pass and returned it to the Greenville 3. Andries then scored on the second play from the 1-yard line. Andries added a 23-yard scamper with 2:53 remaining in the opening stanza to cap a 5-play, 68-yard series to make it 14-0.

Following a Greenville punt, the Tigers drove 84 yards in 10 plays with Jarrod Stiver punching it in from the three to push the DePauw lead to 21-0 with 11:48 left in the half.

Midway through the second, DePauw linebacker Charlie Gruner picked off Butterfield and returned the ball to the Greenville 40. Andries teamed with Devon Valentine on a 12-yard scoring pass to extend the lead to 28-0 with 5:57 remaining in the half.

Greenville’s lone score came with six seconds left in the quarter as Butterfield tossed a 14-yard score to Delrey Crowder.

The Tigers wasted little time in the third in extending the lead as Liam Pooler returned the kickoff 45 yards to the Greenville 42 and Andries connected with Ethan Hudson for 40 yards before Stiver rushed in from the 2 to make it 35-7.

DePauw’s final score came in the fourth as Andries ran for 30 yards to cap a 10 play, 89-yard possession that was set up by Gruner’s second pick of the game at the goal line on fourth down.

Andries rushed for 86 yards on eight carries, while Stiver chipped in 69 on 15 tries. Andries completed 14 of 26 passes for 180 yards with six going to Josh Major for 67 yards.

Butterfield completed 16 of 28 for 154 yards with Frank Moreno hauling in four for 39 yards. Paul Garrett rushed for 52 yards in 21 attempts.

Gruner and Nathan Seifert each totaled eight tackles with Seifert, Joe Zanca and Cole Baker recording one sack apiece. Ashton Moultrie paced Greenville with five tackles.

DePauw outgained Greenville, 379-21 including 199-167 on the ground. The Tigers also held a 21-19 edge in first downs and totaled 6.0 tackles for losses of 22 yards.
