Chavez made the catch and neither player was injured in the collision. With spring weather finally back, Monday featured a full slate of games throughout the county.

CLOVERDALE – Hailey Gardner was as big a help to her own cause on the mound as anyone during Cloverdale’s softball opener against Dugger Union Monday night.

The senior pitcher broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run that helped paved the way for the Clovers to start 1-0 with a 10-4 win over the Bulldogs.

“I was really happy with the way we played tonight considering we do not have anyone that has played in a varsity game for more than a couple of inning,” Cloverdale head coach Jim Spencer said. “Hopefully we can learn from some of our mistakes tonight and continue to get better.

Gardner gave up a pair of runs in the top of the first but a passed ball and a Sydney Willis sac fly helped Cloverdale tie the score at 2-2 after an inning of play.

The two-out home run was just the start as fielding woes kept the Clover third inning going long enough to add four more runs, padding the lead to 8-2.

Dugger Union got two runs back in the top of the sixth on a two-run home run by Gracee Rogers but more Bulldog fielding mishaps allowed Bernard and Peyton Bell to score to secure the win.

Gardner threw all seven innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs while striking out seven and walking a solitary batter while also being the only batter with multiple hits.

“Hailey pitched a solid seven innings and hit a two-run home run to help her cause,” Spencer said about the senior hurler. “Freshman Keelie Price made several good catches in right field to keep Dugger from having a big inning.”

After falling behind 3-0, Raigan Chavez sparked a two-out rally with a triple, scoring on an Emma Hunter single before Shay Baker-Watson reached on a hard grounder.

Hunter scored on a passed ball but no more damage was done the Eels would go on to a hit three home runs, including a grand slam, to ease to victory.

Evelyn Briones took the loss on the mound, surrendering 11 runs, five earned, on nine hits and six walks while striking out two.

Elise Lausee drove in the other Tiger Cub run in the sixth inning. Greencastle faces North Central at home Tuesday at 6 p.m.

  • A couple edits for the GC game, her name is spelled Raigan and she hit a triple not a double. 🙂

    Response by Banner Graphic:
Thanks for the correction on Raigan's name. We will check and make sure how the hit was recorded.
  • I know I am a little Greencastle biased right now but why would you put a picture of a not so proud moment for Greencastle instead of a picture of the only county team that won that night?! At least go into the archives and get one from last year if you didn’t have one handy!
