REELSVILLE — A large fire that engulfed a garage in the Reelsville area called on multiple fire departments Wednesday evening.

At about 8 p.m., the Reelsville/Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 6470 W. CR 720 South for a structure fire. Firefighters arrived to a fire that had spread to a garage from the remains of a house. A box alarm was then sent out.

The Greencastle Fire Department responded with an engine, while the Cloverdale Township, Madison Township and Poland volunteer fire departments, as well as the Putnamville Correctional Facility Fire Department, each responded with a tanker. Putnam County EMS was also at the scene. Duke Energy also arrived and turned off the electricity to the garage.

The tankers pulled water from the Reelsville Water Authority down the road from the fireground.

Firefighters used the deck gun and hand lines to tackle the fire. Once it was knocked out, debris was removed to extinguish potential hot spots.

Reelsville VFD reported that 17,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the blaze.

Reelsville firefighters went back into service at about 11 p.m. after salvage and overhaul were completed.

The garage and its contents, as well as a boom truck, were a total loss. However, no one was injured during the incident.

Reelsville VFD's John McPherson told the Banner Graphic Friday that the property owner had hired someone to tear down the house and then burn it.

According to Putnam County GIS, the property is listed to Danny and Sandra McKee of Reelsville.
