Two injured in Friday-afternoon accident on U.S. 231

Two were injured Friday afternoon in a rear-ending accident that occurred at the viaduct on U.S. 231 just north of Greencastle.

At about 1:22 p.m., first responders were dispatched to the scene where a semi and an SUV had been stopped on the roadway facing southward. Another SUV then crashed into the preceding one, which was then pushed into the rear of the semi.

The Greencastle Fire Department responded with its rescue truck, while the Greencastle Police Department worked the scene. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and Putnam County were also present.

Greencastle Fire Capt. Kenny Shepherd told the Banner Graphic that two front passengers sustained minor injuries. However, there was no entrapment and personnel were able to free them.

They were transported from the scene, with one of them going to Putnam County Hospital. It is unclear where the other individual was taken.

Shepherd said the road was shut down for approximately half an hour.

Seniour’s Towing retrieved one the SUVs, while the other and the semi were driven from the scene.

The last units went back into service at about 2:26 p.m.

  • That’s a bad area, by the via duct. A few accidents like this have happened recently. It’s also difficult and dangerous trying to exit the drive just south of the railroad overpass. Impossible to see traffic coming from the north until you edge out into the north bounds lane.

  • Do trains run on top of the viaduct? If not, then it is time to take it down and widen the road. If it still being used by the railroad then the railroad should help pay for it to be modernized.

  • Don Antonio - I do agree it is time to replace the "viaduct" however that is one of the busiest railroads in Indiana.
