Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes.

• A Saturday-morning incident sent a Greencastle woman to the hospital after a car hit a mailbox, which in turn hit her.

At 7:38 a.m. on Saturday, Mariette J. Bargen, 80, Greencastle, was backing out of the driveway at 2016 Windemere Dr. in a 2008 Toyota Camry.

Bargen told Deputy Kyle Lee that as she was backing out, her foot got stuck.

This led to her hitting the mailbox, which in turn hit the victim, 67-year-old Marcia Murtagh. Bargen’s vehicle then continued in reverse at a high rate of speed through two different yards before she was able to stop.

Murtagh was being treated by firefighters for an abrasion to her head when Deputy Kyle Lee arrived.

Lee later spoke Murtagh at Putnam County Hospital and her account of events was consistent with Bargen. She said she was trying to flag down Bargen because she could see if she didn’t stop backing, she would hit the mailbox.

Murtagh said Bargen opened her door and looked back, but at the same time, she started backward and a high rate of speed.

The car was towed. Lee estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 11:24 p.m. on Thursday, Justic Chester, 46, Reelsville, was northbound on County Road 325 West in a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado.

Chester told Deputy Gambill he was not paying attention and his vehicle left the road, hitting a mailbox.

Chester verbally made an agreement with the mailbox owner to return the next day and fix the mailbox. However, the owner contacted Putnam County Sheriff’s Office the next day to say that the driver had not returned.

Deputy Gambill estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 8:51 a.m. on Thursday, Tammy S. Burgess, 51, Fillmore, was eastbound on Right-of-Way Road in a 2021 GMC Acadia.

Burgess told Deputy Scott Ducker she lost consciousness for a moment, which caused the vehicle to veer off the north side of the road, where it hit a utility pole head-on.

Burgess was transported from the scene with a complaint of pain all over her body.

The vehicle was towed. Ducker estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 7:15 a.m. on Thursday, James W. Pogue, 57, Cory, was westbound on U.S. 36 approaching County Road 600 West in a 2015 Mack 800 when he hit a deer.

Deputy Ducker estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.
