Monday, July 26, 2021

BRAZIL -- The four teenagers involved in an alleged March 2020 home invasion are working their way through the Clay County court system.

On March 27, 2020, Preston R. Hasler, 19 at the time, and Blake Braun, 18, both from Indianapolis, Weston Havey, 18, of Reelsville and Sierra M. Dewees, 18, of Fillmore were arrested for attempting to force their way into an unidentified Clay County residence while armed.

The homeowner reportedly exchanged gunfire in an attempt to stop them before calling 911. Braun was injured during the incident and taken to the hospital for treatment before being arrested.

Hasler, Braun and Havey were preliminarily charged with Level 1 felony attempted murder and Level 2 felony burglary with a deadly weapon, while Dewees was charged with Level 4 felony burglary.

Hasler recently pleaded guilty on June 1 to Level 2 felony burglary.

On July 19, Clay Circuit Court Judge Joseph Trout sentenced Hasler to 19 years at the Indiana Department of Correction, two of which were suspended to probation.

Clay County Prosecutor Emily Clarke confirmed Hasler would be allowed to receive good time credit — serving three days to receive one day credit — while serving the 17-year executed sentence.

The three other suspects will also make appearances in local courts.

On July 14, Havey also pleaded guilty to felony Level 2 burglary. A sentencing hearing is scheduled in Clay Circuit Court in mid-August.

Charged with felony Level 2 burglary with a deadly weapon, Braun is scheduled to appear for a jury trial in Clay Circuit Court in November.

Charged with felony aiding, inducing or causing a burglary with a deadly weapon, Dewees’s Clay Superior Court case has had numerous continuances because the defense attorney was deployed. Dewees is currently awaiting a jury trial, scheduled at this time in October.

  • I have to say I feel sorry for young kids today. They have no one guide them. They have no chance. Parents are not allowed to take them "behind the woodshed" or discipline them as they will get charged. The world would be a much better place if kids knew what the word respect and hard work means. If they were working at Walmart, they could get a free education!

  • You can be a good parent without beating your children. Unfortunately too many people reproducing the last 20 years+ have no idea of how to do that or willingness to do it. That’s the sad part.

  • Interesting to attach beating to discipline.

  • Beg, I think we all know what “behind the woodshed” alludes to. That’s a bit different than acceptable discipline.

  • The Parents who want to be best friends (instead of parents) and are afraid of their kids being mad at them… My observation on parenting today.

  • does it mean beat, spank, or a metaphor for discipline with teeth? Guess it depends on how we read it.

  • Let me define “Behind the woodshed”: To punish, reprimand, or reprove someone, especially discreetly, secretly, or in private…teaching them right from wrong.
