Gladys June Akers

Gladys June Akers, 92, of Greencastle, passed away Friday, Sept. 3, 2021 at Mill Pond Health Campus in Greencastle.

She was born on June 19, 1929 in Lockland, Ohio, to the late Dewey Woodall and Leega Poynter Woodall.

She was the retired owner of Akers Bait and Tackle in Hollandsburg and Gladys’ Fabric Shop in Rockville. She also was employed by Dellecamp’s Department Store and Vic’s Clothing Store, both in Rockville.

She attended Bellmore High School. She was a member of Big Walnut Missionary Baptist Church in Reelsville and Pleasant Gardens Home Economics Club. She was a talented seamstress, enjoyed crafts and for many years had a booth at the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival.

Her husband of 59 years, Owen “Dutch” Akers, whom she married on Sept. 13, 1947 in Greencastle, passed away on July 11, 2007.

Survivors include her daughter, Janet Crooks of Thayne, Wyo.; son James (Star) Akers of Columbia City; brother Darrel (Sherry) Woodall of Greencastle; sister Diana (Doug) Hansel of Greencastle; seven grandchildren, Davin Crooks, Rebecca (Tom) Cory, Nicole (John) Lowe, Stephanie (Tom) Pitts, Brian Crooks, Colton (Natasha) Akers and Asacia (Jay) Norris; nine great-grandchildren, Brooke (Jacob) Davies, Mathew Cory, Mackenzie and Ava Lowe, Crosby, Owen, Olivia and Sidney Norris and Joe Crooks; three great-great-grandchildren, Will, Luke and Amelia Davies; companion Robert Deakin of Greencastle; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Hendrix; son-in-law Allen Crooks; sister-in-law Madonna Woodall; sister Pauline Woodall; brothers Donald and Gene Woodall; niece Kimberly (Hansel) Arnold; and nephew Mike Woodall.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Gooch Funeral Home, 112 W. Howard St., Rockville, with Doug Hansel officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Garden Cemetery, Rockville. Visitation is from noon until 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gooch Funeral Home.
