Rhiannon Giddens begins DePauw residency with jam session, vocal workshop
Arriving at the DePauw University School of Music as the 2021-22 artist-in-residence, Rhiannon Giddens will open her time in Greencastle with a pair of events this week.
Giddens is a multi-Grammy Award-nominated musician whose work encompasses banjo playing, singing, acting, composing and advocating for previously-erased contributions to American country music.
At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Giddens will host a banjo and instrumental jam session downtown at Music on the Square, followed by a vocal workshop at Kresge Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
For the jam session, Giddens will bring her banjo to the university’s community-oriented space at 21 N. Indiana St., Greencastle. All are welcome to bring their instruments or voices to take part in this communal music making event.

The vocal workshop is open to the public and not a ticketed event.
Giddens’ career has spanned various large-scale projects ranging from co-founding the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops to serving as a curator at Carnegie Hall. She has also performed at the White House during the Obama administration and has been named the Artistic Director of Silkroad.
She recently collaborated with multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi on their second album, “They’re Calling Me Home.”
Giddens will also be performing a Green Guest Artist concert at 7:30 p.m. on April 28 in Kresge Auditorium.
