Baird fined $5,000 for failing to complete House security screening

Congressman Jim Baird

WASHINGTON — Congressman Jim Baird is facing a $5,000 fine for a violation of House security rules.

Political website The Hill reported Tuesday that Baird (R-Greencastle) was fined following an incident last week in which he walked around a metal detector instead of going through it.

According to a Capitol Police memo, an officer tried to get Baird’s attention by placing his hand on his elbow and telling him he needed to go through the screening before entering the House floor.

The memo notes that Baird “made eye contact” but then continued into the chamber.

The Banner Graphic attempted to reach out to Baird’s office for comment on Wednesday but had not heard back as of Thursday morning.

However, a spokesperson for Baird told The Hill he will appeal the fine and “believes this is a misunderstanding that he looks forward to resolving with the Ethics Committee.”

A Vietnam War veteran who lost his left arm in combat, Baird has a prosthetic limb. Officers typically use handheld metal detector wands for those who would otherwise set off the full-sized magnetometers.

House Democrats enacted the fines — which start at $5,000 for the first offense and $10,000 for subsequent offenses — to enforce compliance with the screenings established after the violent Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

A number of lawmakers have been fined for such violations, though several have successfully appealed.

  • It’ll be a tad disingenuous the next time he purports that he backs the blue after this behavior.

  • A couple points:

    1) This is security theater (even beyond TSA levels of ridiculousness). You're really screening elected members of congress?

    2) This rule was put in place not due to security but to score political points by Nancy Pelosi and the democrats. Same thing can be said for the stupid masking fines that they are also levying.

    3) NANCY PELOSI has been observed violating this rule and not been fined, so it appears to be selectively enforced.

  • I agree the rule is stupid. But it’s still a rule legally put in place. Disrespecting an officer charged with enforcing that rule doesn’t strike me as backing the blue.

  • Kios,

Define "legally". This was a house rule that was put in place by fiat by the Pelosi (who i would note has violated it without consequence). Same with the mask mandate. Now if Baird had got into a fist fight with the officer because of this then i would agree with you.

Additionally, i would argue that removing ridiculous "Laws" from the book allows LEOs to actually focus on their critical tasks. Would you rather have this officer hounding elected members of congress to walk through a metal detector or focusing on potential other ACTUAL potential threats.

  • The Speaker of the House has the authority to institute rules such as those, however stupid they are. That’s what I meant by legally.

  • Kios,

Yes by all means lets blindly follow the whims power drunk (and otherwise drunk-drunk) raving lunatic without ANY pushback. I mean why even have judicial review of anything, the "laws" were enacted and therefore they must be OK, right? Just be a good little lemming and do what you're told. do you see how utterly ridiculous you sound!?

  • Rules and laws are rules and laws. Those tasked with enforcing those rules and laws should be treated with respect when doing their jobs. That’s part of backing the blue. It’s a pretty simple concept. Disrespecting the officer isn’t going to get the rule changed.

  • Did i miss it in the story where Baird verbally or physically accosted the officer? No, it clearly states that he made eye contact and the proceeded into the chamber. Not sure how that qualifies as "disrespect" but OK. At some level an unjust rule / law has to be resisted in a peaceful manner to draw attention to it. I'd argue that's exactly what happened here.

  • And as I said before it’ll be a tad disingenuous when Baird purports he backs the blue now. You don’t have to verbally or physically accost someone to disrespect them. It’s sad that respect and honor have exited our entire political system, with few exceptions.

  • So proud of Congressman Baird..This born and raised Hoosier backs him.. Don’t let Pelosi’s BS stop you..

  • Where in the story above did it say Baird disrespected a Capitol officer? Are we to infer, Koios, that you know this to be true? Do we know what was said at the time or have you read the memo? I highly doubt it. Congressman Baird is a true "back the blue" kind of person, so until more info comes out, I feel it's highly erroneous to assume he disrespected anyone - unlike Pelosi and her cronies always do.

  • An LEO asks you to comply with a rule, you refuse. That’s disrespectful to that LEO. It’s not that complicated.

  • Koios--I guess you have never done anything wrong in your life, huh?

Were you potty trained at the point of a gun?

  • Oh Don, your tired little rant is very stale. You need to come up with a new one.

  • Koios--it takes one to know one.

  • I enjoy an energy-filled raucous debate that exposes the truth and ultimately proves a point.

Between debaters KOIOS and DON ANTONIO, DON ANTONIO is clearly the crowd favorite and apparently has accepted the more PRINCEpled position.

    Excuse me; I meant principled.

  • Note the ignoring of the issue as it pertains to LCS theologian NP

  • He knew he would set off the alarm due to his hardware, so why waste the time going through the metal detector?? Kudos to Jim for bypassing it. It's elementary Watson, he would set off the alarm, so he avoided the obvious! They should give a reprieve to those who will set it off! PERIOD!!

    -- Posted by jake71 on Sat, Nov 27, 2021, at 4:34 AM
  • Exceptions are only for the LSC crowd. That being said, he should have followed what was put in place the rest of us follow the law when it comes to driving

-- Posted by beg on Sat, Nov 27, 2021, at 9:43 AM
  • Again, if you have ever met Jim in person, it is OBVIOUS that he has a metal claw for use instead of a normal hand - anybody who debates that is just plain ignorant of reality. I agree with jake71 - he knew it was going off, why he go in there? What we do not know is the actual words and conversation that was had at the time. I know Congressman Baird backs the blue and loves this state and county, so I don't care much about the words the naysayer(s) on here have - they don't know much about what they are talking about.

-- Posted by infiremanemt on Mon, Nov 29, 2021, at 10:09 AM
  • So people with handicaps that set off a metal detector can just avoid it completely since they will always set it off?

Truly one of the dumbest arguments I've ever heard.

  • I see our Mask Up leaders are forgetting to mask up. I love the example set by Theranos Joe and other leading NSCL theologians.

  • Typical, straight out of the deplorable's handbook.

  • BJCP96 said concerning beg-"Typical, straight out of the deplorable's handbook."

Does that mean BJCP96 considers beg a "deplorable" or just her writing?

This happened last week... but what about all the other times?

Is this selective enforcement? Or is Mr. Baird putting on pretense of principle for the sake of ulterior motives? He has certainly been known to do so in the past.

And unless there is standard protocol in place to allow him & others to bypass the machine... walk through the machine, Mr. Baird. When it goes off you can step aside and ask to be wanded...just like everyone else in this country. If I skirted a metal detector and held up a prosthetic as some sort of self-exemption I am sure that I would get more than eye contact.

Members of Congress are no better than the rest of us...despite what they think.

Beg - You make the same "Attack" literally on every article on the BG. I guess by your logic that means you support the NSCL, LSC, LCS or whatever you're calling them this week?
