Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 8:40 p.m. on Monday, Kris A. Kittlaus, 56, Cloverdale, was northbound on State Road 243 when deer ran in front of his 200 Ford F-150.

Kittlaus told Deputy Robert Soilleux he swerved and hit the brakes, which caused the truck to drive off the west side of the road and glance off a tree before careening approximately 80 feet down a ravine, where it came to a stop.

Kittlaus complained of pain all over his body and had a visible goose egg forming on the right side of his head. However, he refused medical aid at the scene.

Curtis Wrecker was contacted, but opted to wait until daylight to more safely retrieve the truck from the ravine.

Soilleux estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 6:33 p.m. on Monday, Blake A. Dudley, 24, Carbon, was eastbound on U.S. 40 in a 2018 Ford Focus when he hit a deer, resulting in heavy front-end damage.

The car was towed. Deputy Soilleux estimated damage at $10,00-$25,000.

• At 2:48 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 19, Michaela D. Windham, 26, Greencastle, was westbound on County Road 100 South near County Road 175 West in a 2017 Dodge Ram when she swerved to miss a deer.

The car left the road and hit a guardrail and then went down a deep embankment on the north side of the road.

Windham was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by Greencastle Fire Department personnel.

Deputy Randy Patrick noted that Windham appeared to be intoxicated and was taken to Putnam County Hospital by Putnam County EMS with unknown head and internal injuries as well as a possible ankle injury.

The hospital gave a preliminary blood draw of .202 alcohol concentration equivalent, though an official blood draw with the State of Indiana was pending as of the filing of Patrick’s report.

Patrick preliminarily charged Windham with driving with an ACE of .15 or greater. On Tuesday, the Putnam County Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Windham with Class A misdemeanor driving while intoxicated endangering a person and Class A misdemeanor driving with an ACE of .15 or more.

The truck was towed. Patrick, who was assisted at the scene by Deputy Derek Line, estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
