Gas leak dispatches Greencastle firefighters Friday

A gas leak that occurred on North Indiana Street near Black Lumber Company called upon Greencastle firefighters Friday afternoon.

At about 11:55 a.m., the Greencastle Fire Department was dispatched to 516 N. Indiana St. for a strong smell of gas. Arriving on the scene five minutes later, firefighters found that a gas line feeding into a residential meter had broken off before its shutoff valve.

Greencastle Fire responded with its two engines. Meanwhile, the residence, as well as the one next door to the north, were both evacuated. Other homeowners in the vicinity were also notified of the leak.

CenterPoint Energy was notified of the leak and had it secured by 1:35 p.m. The power to the residence was shut off and firefighters monitored the air.

Firefighters were released from the scene by 2:10 p.m. after the residence was ventilated. No injuries as a result from the leak have been reported.
