A good citizen is “patriotism personified,”Greencastle High School senior Ben Huff said as he presented his essay and captured the 2021 Washburn Chapter DAR Good Citizen Award for Putnam County.

The son of Jason and Angela Huff of Greencastle, Ben was one of four finalists for the honor which was presented Dec. 7 in a DAR Good Citizens ceremony at the Putnam County Public Library.

This year’s other finalists were David Koosman of Cloverdale High School, Catherine Fry of North Putnam High School and Catherine Hodge of South Putnam High School.

Students are selected for having a variety of interests, participation in school and extracurricular activities, making positive contributions to their home, church and/or community, scholastic achievement and awards and exhibiting such qualities as dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

Each candidate was asked to write an essay about the responsibility of good citizenship, submit a transcript of grades and provide two letters of recommendation.

True patriotism, Huff wrote is the ultimate “representation of truth, justice and the American way.”

“A good citizen is one who is a true patriot,” the GHS senior added.

Huff was one of four county finalists for this year’s Putnam County Lilly Scholar honor won by fellow DAR finalist South Putnam’s Hodge.

Currently working toward his Eagle Scout honor in Boy Scouts, Huff has attained the rank of Life Scout in Boy Scouting, culminating many years of work and dedication.

The epitome of an all-around student, Huff also is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council and the state runner-up GHS Ethics Bowl team.

Athletically, he has been a member of the GHS soccer, swimming and baseball teams, earning academic all-conference honors in all three sports.

Musically, he is first-chair trombone as a member of the GHS Band, pep band and jazz band.
