Nancy Phillips Bassett

Nancy Phillips Bassett, of Carmel, formerly of Greencastle and Fillmore, passed away on Dec. 17, 2021 at Brownsburg Meadows.

She was born on Feb. 6, 1940 to C.N. and Helen (McKamey) Phillips.

She married Duane Bassett on June 1, 1963 and he survives.

Nancy attended Indiana State University where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and was recognized as a 50-year member in 2008.

She was previously employed by DePauw University and IBM Corporation in the field of human resources. She was employed at IBM in both Greencastle and Mechanicsburg, Pa.

She was a member of the Washburn Chapter of the DAR, Putnam County Community Foundation, Putnam County Museum and First Christian Church. She was on the executive committee of the Christian Women’s Club in the Indianapolis North chapter and the Business and Professional Women’s Club.

Previously, she was a longtime advocate for the disabled, serving as coordinator of the Putnam County Council on handicapped citizens and on the board of directors of the Parent Information Resource Center in Indianapolis. She was also the Indiana public relations director for the National League of Families of Prisoners of War and Missing in Southeast Asia.

In addition to her husband of 58 years, she is survived by a daughter, Malinda Bassett Irelan; son-in-law Ron; and grandson Matthew.

She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter Maria.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28 at Bittles & Hurt Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Cornwell officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of service on Tuesday.
