Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated several recent property-damage crashes.

• At approximately 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, Korey Simonson, 31, Bainbridge, was southbound on Heritage Drive in a 2011 Dodge Ram when he lost control going through a bend in the roadway due to slick conditions.

Simonson told Deputy Tanner Brown he spun around before leaving the roadway and getting stuck.

Deputy Brown was not notified of the crash until 8:20 a.m. Upon his arrival, Simonson said he could not find his cell phone after the crash, and it was snowing. He then decided to wait in his truck, and ended up falling asleep. He said the accident happened 3-4 hours before responders arrived.

The truck was towed. Brown estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 6:19 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 14, Amber L. Davis, 42, Cloverdale, was northbound on North Main Street (U.S. 231) in a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado. Hailey E. Caulkins, 16, Cloverdale, was stopped eastbound on Market Street at Main Street in a 2011 Buick Regal.

Davis told Deputy Todd Hopkins that as she approached the intersection the light was red, and she attempted to stop. She said her brakes would not work, instead making a “squeaking” sound. As she passed through the intersection, she struck the passenger side of Caulkins’ vehicle.

Caulkins told Hopkins she was stopped at the light facing east and proceeded into the intersection when the light turned green. She said she only remembered entering the intersection and stopping after the collision.

Two witnesses, who were drivers in cars stopped across from Caulkins, told the deputy the light had turned red for northbound traffic, with the front driver saying she waited at least five seconds after the green light to make sure it was safe to proceed. Both witnesses said it appeared Davis made no attempt to stop at the intersection.

The driver of the front vehicle said that after the collision, Davis got out of her vehicle saying, “I couldn’t stop — I had no brakes.”

Before the vehicles were towed away, Hopkins said he attempted to push the brake pedal on Davis’ truck to confirm her statement. He said he found resistance when he pushed on the pedal.

Additionally Hopkins, who was assisted by Deputy Rob Soilleux, found that Davis did not have a valid driver’s license nor proof of insurance. She told him that she wasn’t sure if the vehicle had valid insurance. As of the filing of the report on Monday, Hopkins had not received proof of insurance.

Damage was estimated at $10,000-$25,000.
