Greencastle strikes late to take win away from Sullivan

Wednesday, May 11, 2022

A late inning offensive surge by the Greencastle Tiger Cubs was enough to support an excellent pitching performance by Keifer Wilson and Treyten Clark in a 4-2 victory over the Sullivan Golden Arrows in a Western Indiana Conference baseball game Wednesday evening. Greencastle scored all four of its runs in the sixth inning to rally and pick up the win and improve to 12-8 on the season and 4-5 in the WIC. Sullivan dropped to 6-13-1 and 2-7 in conference play.

The Golden Arrows threatened early in the game. Sullivan loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a Tiger Cub error, but Wilson struck out two straight to end the inning and strand all three runners for Sullivan on the base path.

Wilson struck out eight batters and gave up just four hits in six innings pitched. The senior kept the Arrows off balance and dominated when he needed in giving up just one run.

Greencastle threatened in the bottom of the second as Clark and Ben Huff reached on walks and moved up to second and third with just one out, but Sullivan replaced starting pitcher Tyler Kellett with Carter McKee who struck out the two Cubs to quell the threat.

Both pitchers continued to dominate until the Cubs loaded the bases again in the fourth inning on three walks. Greencastle could not push one across the plate as Greencastle had twice threatened to score but had not produced a hit yet.

Sullivan finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Wilson appeared to strike out the final batter of the inning, but the ball got by the catcher and Donoven McKinney reached first base. He then stole second and came around to score on a Kellett single giving the Arrows a 1-0 lead.

Greencastle entered the sixth inning without a hit, but the bats woke up. Wilson led off with a double and scored on a Clark single. DJ Wells would reach on an error. Ben Huff would knock them in with a single to right field and then score as Owen Huff doubled and the Cubs had taken a 4-1 lead heading into the final inning.

Sullivan would make it exciting in the top of the seventh as Kailer Johnson doubled to lead off and Isaak Osborne walked. Relief pitcher Clark then struck out a batter and induced an infield fly out. McKinney would single to drive in Johnson, but Clark would get the final out on a routine fly ball to right field and secure the 4-2 win.

Sullivan’s Marcus Roshel had a pair of hits to lead the Golden Arrows, while the Cubs got extra base hits from Wilson and Owen Huff and Ben Huff had a pair of RBIs. All of Greencastle’s hits came in the sixth inning.
