Community Crossings work in Bainbridge nears completion

BAINBRIDGE — Bainbridge is almost finished with last year’s Community Crossings roadwork.

Work previously completed by a Milestone subcontractor was not to standard for the Town of Bainbridge, nor was it technically able to satisfy the quality requirements set forth by the Indiana Department of Transportation.

To be considered for the INDOT grant, municipalities must come up with an asset management and maintenance plan to be submitted alongside the application.

Both Bainbridge and Roachdale had received work that was inadequate, with the former having withheld approximately $50,000 in payment until the contractor came back to fix and essentially finish the job.

Utility Superintendent Eric Gibson said the town has begun liquidating damages and has thus far reached $6,000 in otherwise hard-to-define losses incurred by subpar workmanship.

Bainbridge will soon begin closing out this job in order to move into the second round of Community Crossings funding, as the window of opportunity will come to a close in the next few weeks.

In other business:

• Two representatives from a telecommunications startup made proposals to the council recently to bring fiber optics to every home and business inside town limits. As the two representatives were first seeking approval from the council to begin working up costs they were not able to provide definitive numbers.

The town has since received tiered estimates coinciding with different options for service operations ranging from town owned and operated fiber to a completely hands-off service agreement with a hybrid option in between the two. These estimates are currently under review.

• Bainbridge has turned a profit from the increase in water rates put into place at the beginning of the year.
