Greencastle blasts Brown County on homecoming

Saturday, September 24, 2022

The Greencastle Tiger Cubs took advantage of five Brown County turnovers, scoring seven times in the first half to upend the Eagles 63-7 on homecoming night at Harbison Stadium Friday Night.

The scoring was fast and furious for Greencastle. On the second play of the game, Brighton Boggess pounced on a loose ball to set up the first score, Lamar Moore carried the load on the first drive, taking it in from four yards out for the touchdown. Ian Williamson added the extra point to make it 7-0 quickly.

After a short punt by the Eagles, the Cubs had another short field. This time Jacob Miller dropped back and found Owen Huff for a 30-yard strike to go up two scores.

Another fumble by Brown County, this time recovered by Cameron Pingleton, set up another short field. Two plays later, Peyton Welker powered in from ten yards out and the Cubs were rolling.

A bad snap by the Eagles gave Greencastle great field position at the six-yard line. It took just one play for Moore to plunge in on a six-yard score. They would add one more score on another Welker run to go up 35-0, still in the opening quarter.

Chase Carrington got in the scoring in the second quarter. He took a handoff and rumbled eight yards to make it 42-0.

The Eagles would finally get on the board when Noah Lewis found Brady Bond in the back of the end zone.

Greencastle would make sure that the running clock would be in effect for the second half as Carrington scored again, this time from 10 yards out. Williamson, who was perfect for the night on the extra points, made it a 49-7 halftime lead.

“We made plays, we made minimal mistakes; the effort was fantastic.” Greencastle interim coach Matt Helmer said.

With the running clock rule in effect the second half went fast. The Cubs got another score early when Miller rolled around the left side and scooted 30 yards for the touchdown. They would get one more in the final period when Wade Hamilton blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone to get the final 63-7.

The win moves the Cubs to 3-3 on the season and 2-1 in their division of the WIC. Two more division game remain. Next up is senior night next Friday as they host Cloverdale and the finale in three weeks at North Putnam.

“Back end of the season is kinda loaded with the games the kids look forward to. It’s gonna be a fun couple of weeks,” added coach Helmer.
