Tuesday was not the best shooting night for the Greencastle girls’ basketball team.

It didn’t matter when the defense suffocated Crawfordsville for 32 minutes.

The Athenians were put to the sword by a Tiger Cub side that forced numerous turnovers and hounded the visitors all over the court defensively in a 52-8 rout.

“Defensively, we had a real good game,” Greencastle head coach Doug Greenlee said. “Our ball movement wasn’t good tonight; we stayed on the right side of the floor, didn’t reverse the ball, didn’t drive inside and kick and when we did, we were effective.

“We settled for too many long bombs and that’s been our tendency. That’s something we have to get over and be smarter.”

Greencastle started out with a 7-0 lead and finished the first quarter with a 17-4 advantage as Gloria Brewer had nine points in the frame and only Taylor Abston getting on the scoresheet for Crawfordsville, scoring both baskets in the quarter.

Emma Hunter added seven points for the Tiger Cubs in the second quarter as the lead stretched to 30-6 at halftime.

“The girls had active hands, controlled the bolds and had good position on defense,” Greenlee said about the defense, which only allowed four baskets, a single trip to the free throw line and eight total fouls. “The foul count being low meant we were using our feet to defend instead of our hands, which is good.”

Despite the wide gap, the home side struggled to knock down shots much of the evening yet were still able to enforce a running clock midway through the third quarter at 41-6 as there was a nine-minute gap between baskets from Riley Gardner in the second quarter and Molly Pierce in the third quarter.

Crawfordsville did not score over the final 10:52 of the game, however, as Greencastle cruised to a sixth-straight win.

Brewer scored 24 points while Hunter added 17 points but no other Tiger Cub scored more than four points.

Greencastle returns to action next weekend with a lengthy back-to-back weekend, traveling to West Vigo Friday and Indian Creek Saturday.

Greenlee said the offense had to fine tune some items as the Vikings and Braves would offer far more stern tests for the offense.

“We’re going to take three days off and get some rest as we’ve been going hard at it since Oct. 17,” Greenlee said. “We’ll get back at it to get ready for West Vigo and Indian Creek, both on the road and we are going to have to improve some things offensively.

“We have to work on ball reversals, penetrating, getting some touches in the paint and making things happen there.”

  • I love basketball, but I’d like to see how the county wrestling & swim teams are doing too.

    Thanks!
