Doris Jean McMains

Doris Jean McMains, 86, of Greencastle, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022, at her residence.

Doris was born in Greencastle on Nov. 3, 1936, the daughter of John LeRoy and Opal Opra (Grimes) Patterson, and was a 1955 graduate of Greencastle High School.

Mrs. McMains was a member of First Christian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary.

Her first job right out of high school was at Handy’s Dairy. She was a hard worker and also worked at Ace Hardware, Hillman’s Jewelry Store and Moore’s Shoes. She also worked in food service at DePauw University, South Putnam High School and Greencastle Community Schools. In addition, Doris was a babysitter and took care of many children as if they were her own.

She enjoyed life, and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her fiancé, Ray Gillinger; four children, Gena Buis (Jeff), Dick McMains (Kim), Ronnie McMains (Roni) and Lisa Peacock (Chuck); a brother, Don Patterson (Adrenne); a sister-in-law, Norma Patterson; 14 grandchildren, Leah Kirkman (Brandon), Ashley Jackson, Logan Buis (Taylor), Ryan McMains, Brook Whitaker, Garth McMains, Derrick Peacock, Carly Beck, Ben Beck (Makenzie), Blake Alexander (Kyle), Steven Welliver, Joslyn Beck, Jessica Peacock and Hailey Wood; 10 great-grandchildren, Kale Kirkman, Briggs Buis, Kenadie Jackson, Kora Kirkman, Remy Buis, Mariah Welliver, Addy Beck, Baker Buis, Evan Beck and Lanie Livesay; and several nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James McMains; a son, James Albert McMains; a granddaughter, Meaghan Buis; five brothers, John, Bob, Jack, Furman and Keith Patterson; six sisters, Edith Fall, Sally Stewart, Virginia Pulliam, Joan Leslie, Sue Inman and Kay Gilley; and a brother-in-law and sister-in law, Bill and Mary McMains.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Champion officiating. Burial will follow in Fillmore Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service on Tuesday.
