Helen Louise Hummer, 84, of Greencastle and formerly of Clay City, passed away peacefully while surrounded by family at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis on March 6, 2023.

Nana, as she was best known by those who knew and loved her, wasn’t only a devoted mother and grandmother to her own, but to so many who needed one. Anyone who needed a plate to eat had a place at her table, any hour of the day. She treated every kid like they were her own. Her profession was taking care of people, which she did beautifully.

She had a deep love for Elvis, The Golden Girls and her grandchildren. Her favorite thing in her later days was teaching her grandson Christian prayers at bedtime. It was her proudest accomplishment. She loved everyone completely and fiercely without judgment.

Helen was born in Lewis, Ind., the daughter of Hank and Edith (Metcalf) Miller on Oct. 17, 1938.

She grew up in Clay City with her four brothers and sisters and attended Clay City High School. She spent the next years caring for her family in Indianapolis, where she worked for the Budweiser company.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hank and Edith Miller; her husband, Theodore Hummer; her daughter, Angela Hummer; her sister, Bonnie; and her brothers, Kenneth and Donald.

She is survived by her son, Ken Hummer; grandchildren she raised as her own, Angie (David) Hinton, Stephanie (Andrew) King and Steven (Abriel) Hummer; and her most beloved and cherished great-grandchildren, Danielle, Kurtis, Rachael, Eden, Lily, Lee, Nova, Christian and Kash. She is also survived by her brother, Ray Miller; nephew Tom Miller; and the King brothers, Chane, Bryan, and Derrick, whom she considered her adopted grandsons.

Visitation will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 E. 8th St., Clay City, on Thursday, March 16 from 3-5 p.m. Services will be at the funeral home at 5 p.m.
