Man jailed after gun incident at Castlebury Apartments

A Greencastle man was taken to the Putnam County Jail Tuesday morning after displaying and later firing a gun at a local apartment complex.

Police were called to Castlebury Apartments at 8:42 a.m. for a male displaying a handgun near the playground.

As police were en route, the original caller advised the man had fire shots before fleeing into a building. The caller also identified the man as 20-year-old Deandre Benjamin.

Police from the Greencastle Police Department and Putnam County Sheriff’s Office both arrived to find him in the building reported, still in possession of the gun.

Benjamin complied when told to drop the firearm, and was taken into custody without incident.

Assistant Chief Ed Wilson told the Banner Graphic that GPD detectives soon arrived and found spent casings that matched the gun in Benjamin’s possession.

He was taken to the Putnam County Jail, preliminarily charged with criminal recklessness with a firearm, criminal trespass and pointing a firearm.

No injuries were reported to bystanders, police or to Benjamin.

“Great result to what could have been a very bad situation,” Wilson said. “We’re glad officers didn’t have to take any action we didn’t want to take. Any time we can resolve an incident like this without anyone getting hurt, we are happy.”

  • Glad no one was injured and the person in question cooperated with authority

  • That place needs to be demolished. It is full of drugs, child molesters, criminals and sex offenders. What started out as a decent affordable place to live has been ruined by the people they allow to live there.

  • The Queen once again makes assumptions and judgements without facts. How exactly would the management determine who to "allow" to live there?

  • I've never heard of the place, but it's only fifteen minutes from a MacDonald's and probably only ten minutes during an emergency hunger attack. Can't be all that bad.
