Cougars are not unfamiliar to where Trine University is.

Former Putnam County Defensive Player of the Year Skylar Warren makes his home up in Angola and soon, another North Putnam player will don the Thunder logo on the football field.

Arrick Kramer recently signed on to join the football program at Trine starting in the 2023-24 school year with the soon-to-be Cougar graduate excited by what the university had to offer.

“I liked the opportunities and the people that are there,” Kramer said. “The program I want to pursue is biology with a premed track and what that program offers, the resources and the people that are in that program, I see a bright future at Trine.

“After I get my bachelor’s degree, I would like to be a sports med doctor, so I would apply to med school. I looked at Franklin and Wabash but the best opportunities for me were at Trine.”

The Thunder have not had a losing season since rebranding from Tri-State College in 2007 and have only gone .500 once in that time span, helping to build a strong athletics program across all sports, a trait Kramer said gave the school plenty of energy.

“I like the people and the atmosphere is all football and sports centered,” Kramer said. “They love their football and hockey is a big thing up there, too.

“I like the weather and it’s still in Indiana. They’ve done a lot of renovations on the campus as well lately and it has a lot of things to offer. Every time I’ve gone up there, it’s just gotten better and better.”

As far as inside the program, Kramer said the coaches would be keeping him on the offensive side of the ball once he arrives on campus.

“I’ve talked to the coaches and they will likely utilize me as a running back and slot freshman year,” Kramer said. “It’s going to be tough; I’ll need to put on some more weight, become faster and stronger but that’s how it always is.

“I just have to be the best athlete I can be and work in the offseason.”

Kramer said the key was to keep everything in balance while building into life at the collegiate level.

“The time for everything; I’m going to have to balance my life well,” Kramer said about the biggest adjustment. “Academically, athletically and socially, I’m going to have to find a way to succeed in all of those areas, balancing them all equally so as not to fall behind in any one of those things.”

Already getting workouts this spring, Kramer said he was eager to get started in Angola next fall.

“I’m already going to see a lifting and speed coach for things like plyos and other workouts,” Kramer said. “Even then, I’m so excited and can’t wait to get up there and play.

“It’s a new opportunity for me. I get to meet new people and I just can’t wait for this next chapter.”
