Loretta Lynne Maxwell passed away unexpectedly on March 25, 2023. She was 83.

She was born on Sept. 8, 1939. She was the daughter of Harlis and Thelma Duncan of Greencastle. They preceded her in death.

Loretta graduated from Greencastle High School in 1958 and attended Indiana University.

She worked for 33 years and retired from Duke Energy in Plainfield. She held several positions, but her favorite was in human resources.

She married Frank Kessler in 1960, and he preceded her in death in 1995. In 1999, she married James Maxwell, who preceded her in death in 2019. She felt blessed to have two wonderful husbands who loved her dearly.

Loretta exemplified kindness, compassion and hospitality to anyone she encountered. She was the happiest when spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed entertaining, playing cards, shopping, painting, drawing and spending time in Florida. She also derived great pleasure from her time with her sisters of Kappa Delta Phi.

She was a member of Greencastle Christian Church, and also enjoyed attending the First Christian Church of Staunton.

Loretta is survived by her children, Frank (Chip) Kessler II (wife Rhonda) of Greencastle and Christina Bittles (husband Richard) of Lakewood Ranch, Fla. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Makenzie Modesitt (husband Dan), Jacob Kessler (fiancé Carly Miller), Katlin Kessler, Aaron Bittles, Melissa Dharma (husband Sathish) and Melanie Parker (husband Eric). She loved playing with her great-grandchildren Caleb D., Sophia D., Ella M., Ryan P., Ruth D. and Luke P. Because she was an only child, she cherished times with her in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Loretta’s family would greatly appreciate hearing from those who cared deeply about her. Her family has created a special email to accept memories at MemoriesOfLoretta@gmail.com. We invite you to send photos or a fond memory of Loretta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kappa Delta Phi, 1007 Indianapolis Rd., Greencastle, IN 46135.

Visitation will be on Thursday, March 30 from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. at Bittles & Hurt Funeral Home, 602 E. Washington St., Greencastle. The service will immediately follow the visitation. She will be laid to rest at New Providence Cemetery in Belle Union.
