COLLEGE REPORT: Bates eyes track repeat; Leonard bat helping Spartans roll

Ray Bates of Cloverdale looks to defend his Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference 400-meter indoor championship this weekend as the Rose-Hulman Engineers compete in the HCAC Outdoor Championships at Franklin.

Bates won the HCAC indoor title in a time of 50.43, and topped that time with a 49.98 in winning the Indiana DIII Track and Field Meet on April 15.

Bates, a junior, is majoring in mechanical engineering.

Drew Bratcher, Sr., DePauw – Has started 21 games this year, batting .245 with six runs scored, three doubles, two home runs and seven RBI.

Brionna Egold, So., Manchester – Has played in 16 games, starting 12, with a .176 batting average. Has scored two runs, hit three singles and has five RBI. Has pitched in five games, starting two, with one complete game and a 1-0 record. Has a 4.06 ERA.

Sabrina Leonard, Fr., Manchester – Ranks second on team in hitting at .355 with 33 hits in 93 at-bats. Has scored 20 runs, hit 11 doubles, one triple, two home runs and has recorded team-high 26 RBI.

TRACK AND FIELD

Cloverdale

Ray Bates, Jr., Rose-Hulman – Had team’s best time of season in 400 meters with winning time of 49.98 at Indiana DIII Track and Field Meet on April 15. Ran opening leg of second-place 4x400 relay team in Rose-Hulman Twilight meet with time of 3:22.57.

Kenzie Stoltz, Jr., Indiana State – Had indoor season best time of 9.97 in 60-meter hurdles in ISU Open meet.

Keeley Hughes, Jr., Marian – Finished 14th in discus at Little State Meet with throw of 27.61 meters.

Chase Ashcraft, So., Judson (Ill.) – Placed 52nd in 800 meters in time of 2:07.27 in Meet of Champions on April 21-22.
