CRAWFORDSVILLE – Nearly two months ago, at the beginning of the girls’ tennis season, Greencastle took on Parke Heritage in the first match of the year.

It was somewhat fitting that the first hurdle Allie Landry had to face in Wolves No. 1 Laura Hansmann would be the same one that she would need to be clear in order to advance in the IHSAA Girls’ Tennis Individual State Tournament.

Landry did so in a stronger fashion that the first time the two squared off, defeating Hansmann 6-1, 6-1 to win the Crawfordsville Individual Sectional title.

“(Hansmann) played better today but I also feel that I improved throughout the season,” Landry said about the two matches against Hansmann. “It felt weird coming out here, stretching by myself and warming up by myself but it wasn’t anything I hadn’t done before.

“There was a lot more pressure today than when I’ve played by myself out of season because people came out to watch me play. It was still fun to be out playing.”

Landry shot out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set though both players had difficulties in the service game as a consistent northern breeze did enough to alter the normal pattern each player took behind the line.

Hansmann picked up her only game in the set on Landy’s serve as a pair of double faults helped briefly make it 4-1.

“I had a lot of trouble with my serve, so I started serving a little bit lighter to be more consistent,” Landry said about figuring out the service game as the match went on. “I also adjusted how much pace and spin I used.

Landry broke Hansmann’s serve again and finished off the next serve to take the opening set, winning the next three games for a 3-0 lead in the second set.

Hansmann was able to win the fourth game of the set to make it 3-1 but Landry quickly resumed control and polished off a sectional title win after an hour of play.

“Allie said it at the time that she was nervous because it was her very first high school match. She showed a lot of maturity tonight,” Greencastle head coach Anette Munoz said about the strides Landry had made between the two meetings. “She knew her weaknesses and strengths coming into the match, knew what she needed to warm up on, what adjustments she needed to make throughout the match and is a very smart player.

“She took a lot of chances with the ball early with good angles. The confidence and growth she’s made is tremendous this season.”

Landry will now play in the IHSAA Fishers Regional June 3 against the winner of the Center Grove Sectional in the second match of the regional. The winners from Fishers and Plainfield will play the first match and the winners of those matches will play in the final for a place in the state finals.
