LETTER: Support appreciated following Fislar tragedy

Thursday, May 2, 2024

To the Editor:

On behalf of the greater law enforcement community, I would like to take a moment and thank several local organizations that recently helped with the funeral services for Hendricks County Deputy Freddy Fislar in Cloverdale.

Sheriff Jerrod Baugh

When these events occur, the world comes to a stop for the family. But what is not seen by all is what starts to take place behind the scenes and those who assist in completing this remarkable task of honoring one of our fallen professionals. The Indiana Fraternal Order of Police Memorial Team is a group of volunteers that stand ready to assist the family in the funeral service and providing the help and support during this important event. Unfortunately for our families, this group has participated in many events like this and has become very efficient.

We at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office were honored to be invited to assist with the planning and support of this event. But that is when Putnam County stepped in as a group.

The Putnam County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) helped with both planning and providing a much-needed role with the traffic flow and assistance with visitors. This is a fine group of volunteers who come prepared to communicate and complete many tasks handed to them.

Baker’s Septic Service was called late in the day and started a truck in motion within minutes — not hours — making sure that our needs for their work were completed well before it was necessary. The Salvation Army, Cloverdale Police, Putnam County Highway, Cloverdale school system and many more I am sure that are not listed.

It is my hope that we are never needed again, but it is good to know that so many stand ready to provide our community and others with whatever is needed to get the job done.

With great gratitude and respect,
Sheriff Jerrod E. Baugh
