Charles E. Newgent

Charles E. Newgent, 80, Greencastle, died Sunday morning at Mill Pond Health Campus.

Born in Clinton Township, he was the son of Charles E. Newgent St. and Opal F. (Burk) Newgent.

A graduate of Clinton Center High School, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the European and Pacific theaters during World War II. He was employed by Lone Star Industries in Greencastle for 42 years until his retirement.

He was a member of Deer Creek Coon Hunters Association, in which he had several offices, a past president of American Coon Hunters Association, and a former board member of the National Redbone Association.

He married Connie E. Baird on Aug. 10, 1946. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, David J. Newgent and wife Toni, Cloverdale, and Richard K. Newgent and wife Teri L., Crawfordsville; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son James "Jim Eddie" Newgent, halfbrother Claude Newgent, and sister Earlene Berry.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Elgin Smith officiating. Burial will be in Brick Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday.
