Elgin Smith

Elgin Thompson Smith, 87, Indianapolis, formerly of Greencastle, died June 20.

Born in Bath County, Ky., he graduated high school in 1938 at Mt. Sterling, Ky.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., in 1942, and a master's degree from Lexington Theological Seminary in 1945.

He was an active Disciples of Christ minister for more than 45 years before retiring in 1984. He pastored in Kentucky before ministering at First Christian Church in Greencastle from 1955-60. He was organizing pastor for Sherwood Christian Church in 1960 and served until his retirement. He was president of the Greencastle Ministerial Association, and held regional and state offices with the Christian Church. He helped found food and clothing banks, and served as chaplain to the Indiana State Farm and Putnam County Hospital. After retirement, he served as interim pastor and officiated at weddings and funerals upon request.

He married Dorothy Marks Smith, who preceded him in death Jan. 10, 2001.

Surviving are daughter Martha Virginia Smith and husband C. Burt Caldwell, and Ernest Edward Smith and wife Bonnie Fuson Smith; a brother, Paul Smith and wife Mary; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Westview Christian Church, Indianapolis, with burial at 1 p.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Friday at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center, Zionsville.
